What to Consider When Choosing a Student Laptop

Not sure which student laptop to go for? We’ve put together a handy list of what to consider – but don’t just take our word for it. We asked Dr Tina Eftekhar, a Barrister Training Course student,  what really matters when choosing the right one, here is what she said:

“For study, I look for a laptop that’s lightweight, reliable, and has a long battery life to keep up with all-day sessions. Ease of use and good performance for multitasking are also key, especially when switching between research, writing, and video calls.”

With that in mind, here are the key things to look out for when picking your ideal laptop:

Performance

For most students, a laptop with 8GB RAM and a modern processor is enough for research, essays, and video calls. However, your degree matters - if you’re studying graphic design, IT, videography, film production, or development courses like web or game development, you may need a more powerful machine with higher specs, dedicated graphics, and a faster processor to handle demanding software and creative projects. Check out our dedicated guide for choosing a laptop for creative industries.

Portability

A slim, lightweight design with a long battery life is ideal for busy days on campus.

Storage

SSD storage (256GB or more) ensures faster boot-up times and smooth performance.

Display

A clear Full HD (FHD) screen helps reduce eye strain during long study sessions.

Value

Balance your budget with the features you need. These models offer excellent value for students.
